What is Autism?

Autism is a neurodevelopmental disorder that was coined in 1911 by Paul Eugen as a form of childhood schizophrenia, then famously further described seperately by Leo Kanner and Hans Asperger in 1943 and 1944 respectively. Today, Autism is a single diagnosis (Aspergers was dropped from the DSM in 2013) under the name Autism Spectrum Disorder, aka ASD. Autism has historically been described and defined by allistics (the word for non-autistics), and the landscape of Autism knowledge today is full of misinformation and harmful myths. What exactly autism is neurologically is unknown, but it is known for certain to be at least partially hereditary. Generally, we believe there are four symptom groups (which I've dubbed Neo-criteria, and which all begin with the letter "S" so are informally called "The Four S's"): Special Interests, Social Divergence, Sensory Processing Differences, and Stereotyped and Repetitive Behavior.
